(The Shape of Banananesia)

1. Exhibition Introduction

At the dyeing and weaving studio Banananesia, Yasuhiro Fukushima’s story begins with a single seed. From the plantain field to the studio’s day-to-day production, every piece of cloth, paper, and clothing originates from his deep respect for nature and unparalleled patience for craftsmanship. Fukushima considers each step of production as a stage of life — from planting a plantain seed and carefully nourishing its growth, to harvesting the plant’s fibres which are then woven by hand, all the way to their detailed patterning by bingata, the traditional Okinawan resist dyeing technique. The studio’s creative process is an enduring dialogue with nature and the passage of time, bearing a tender commitment to all living beings.

The exhibition ‘The Shape of Wild Bananas’ follows the path of the plantain, from the daily weaving and dyeing of the studio in Okinawa, across to Lanyu, Vietnam, and the island chains of Oceania, tracing the shape and story of the plantain through different perspectives. In this special exhibition, the audience can also appreciate works from Okinawan bingata dye masters created with paper yarn, a Taiwanese fibre innovation. Suho Memorial Paper Museum anticipates that this meeting of traditional Okinawan crafts with Taiwanese fibre technology will expand our visions of sustainable living, where humans and nature, tradition and the contemporary, and craft and technology exist in symbiosis.

II. About Yasuhiro Fukushima and Banananesia (バナナネシア では) dyeing and weaving studio

Born in 1956 in Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture, Yasuhiro Fukushima is at the helm of the dyeing and weaving studio Banananesia. As a student of the kijōka-bashōfu (banana fibre cloth) tradition, Fukushima is skilled in the traditional method of Okinawan bashō cloth production. He has long collaborated with the plantain (Musa balbisiana, also known as wild banana), exploring its potential and applying its unique characteristics to drive his creative production, which includes bashō cloth, paper, and works that combine weaving with the Okinawan bingata dye technique.

Founded on reviving and passing on the traditional skills of Okinawan bashō cloth, the studio dedicates itself to discovering the secrets behind bashō’s growth through innovation and research. The dyeing and weaving studio has introduced a new propagation method of direct seeding (planting seeds) to prevent the deterioration of banana fibres caused by propagating through stem division (separating offshoots). In addition, the studio allocates the circular layers of the wild banana plant towards different uses. It maintains meticulous control over the plantain’s entire course of growth to guarantee the material’s quality and aesthetics, in its continual pursuit of the inherent beauty in the material.
